Killing it with the bass in that negative space the kick leaves. MMPH-BOOP
And the FM or low pass sweep where the bass opens up slowly (00:22-00:24) is FUCKING DELICIOUS.
The mix is a hair muddy with all the reverb, the tom patches could stand being more cheesy 80s and the lead arp lead doesn't walk octaves enough imho, but the legato lead is absolutely spot-on.

KSBeats responds:

Thanks for the feedback :)

I like it a whole bunch! I'd suggest easing up on the sidechaining a bit though (unless that's an element of the genre) it's a great addition in moderation as an accentuation of the song's pulse. But that's personal opinion really, I've got a handful of things I probably use in excess-- namely grain shifting and "IDM" breakbeats.
I think it detracts from the chord changes, especially where the kick hits in more rapid succession.
THAT BEING SAID, loving the sneaky vocoder/Vocal resynth @3:00 and overall the wide sense of movement in the filter modulation.

Breakthrough responds:

Thank you so much man!
I'm tired of seeing "Great music man" or "I love it!"
I NEED to get reviews like this, that way I can improve
on my weaknesses, and keep throwing my strengths
into my songs. I really appreciate it man.
I'm glad you heard the little vocals too ;)

Thanks - Saao

Holy fuck, this is home.
I've been meaning to get off my ass and get back into stop-motion animation (I did it for a few months when I was 14 or so) would you mind if I used this? It's gonna take a few months to scrape myself together, but goddamn. Golly!

jambrother2 responds:

if you like it, have it! send me a link when you've done your stuff :)

Interesting! I heard raggd46's Mors Vinvit Omnia, and saw your review in the comments and was like "Golly I should look into this, I kind of want to do something similar"
I feel like the glitched vocal bits could've used some formant shifting and/or decimation, but I dunno, it's a personal decision, haha. Like, grain shifting (or rapid partial sampling or gating, I dunno how gerxactly you did this but the boot fits any of these feet) feels a tick strange with such smooth acapella work, but bee holder's eye and whatnot.
All in all NOICE! :D

ZipZipper responds:

Thanks so much! I agree, the flowing a cappella followed by disaster was awkward; my fault for being experimental. I'm actually quite elementary when it comes to playing with slicing and dicing. I never thought about using formant shifting or any sort of decimation, but I just now realized a lot of great glitch has that everywhere...I'm clueless when it comes to production value...I also use GarageBand, so my choice of effects is limited and typically more time consuming than it has to be...

I love it! The almost marching band kind of drum troupe rhythm balancing a static beat and pulling the transitions along, AH! Well executed, despite the mix for the drums feeling a touch hollow.
The delayed arpeggios in the background complement the leads nicely, and the rapid SNES-ish slides and frequency modulated noises opening, transitioning and ending the track meshed with the rest of the track without so much as a hiccup.
NOICE WORK :D

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Thanks, dude!
Interesting how you say marching band, even though snare is probably the most drowned of the drums XD
I get what you mean though!

Great to hear that the arpeggios worked for ya, as well as the other little things I added here and there :3

P.S. I really hope your track will still get featured :/

Everything works out fairly unique~ My only few qualms is that the arpeggios get a little stale before they fade out-- the mix is a little quiet--and toward the end (roughly 3:10) there seems to be a chord out of place (the second in the pattern). One that's major that would be a little more harmonious if it were minor.

sYrge responds:

Thanks for the feedback! I learned that every chord in the pattern is intended to be minor, and I even checked that chord and it IS minor (It may sound major because of the fact that it's a ninth) and that exact chord is played with the same voice in every single repetition of the chord pattern anyway. But thanks for your opinion anyway! :)

I absolutely love the unconventional percussion~ those high-cutoff sounding bleeps and bloops, AHH!
Lots of progression in the arrangement, kind of like a more dynamic M.C. Escher endless staircase (in that it feels like it's constantly moving forward, despite looping, but dynamic in the sense of...well, dynamics, haha)
I actually really like the "lower" quality real VSTi's. It gives it a sort of character that it wouldn't have if it were made of more believable VSTi's, but I can definitely relate with putting a lot of time into a composition, and trying to get a real-sounding sound and being unable to.

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

I'm glad you like the percussion. I actually really like that effect too :)
I definitely understand what you mean with the M.C. Escher ndless staircase comparison! I had thought about this piece in similar ways as well :3

Yeah. As I don't have realistic instruments, I wasn't going for realism in this piece. I focused on creating nice sounds instead of realistic ones :D It'd be cool to have great VSTi's though!

Thanks a lot for the review, gween123!!! XD

I feel that it needs a little more consistency, or at least suggestion of consistency, and a more developed transition between parts of the song. I really liked what was happening at the 2 minute mark. The bass continued to pulse behind the rest of the track, and it kept it moving, but the melody kind of truncated it prematurely, and then moved onto another theme without a transition between the two.
OH! And the "generic" lead was a little off-sounding. I dunno, those little jumps in tone are a little distracting, and stop before a rhythm with the rest of the song is developed.
I saw that you were in the "review for review" forum post, and if you could review my song "Limbic Syndrome" I'd greatly appreciate it :D

Wayv responds:

Thanks for the review man--means a lot!

As a standalone piece, this is great! But as has been covered through some of the other reviews, the rhythm doesn't breathe a good jazz kind of feeling. Your right hand certainly knows what it's doing, haha, but the left is playing on the first beat of the measure almost exclusively. I'd try practicing getting a good pulse on the offbeats with your left, maybe a 1-(rest)-(and)-3-4 kind of rhythm, and work the right hand into the emotion of the left.

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Thanks for the tips! I'll make sure to take them to heart ;)
Once I get time...
(Oh, and my right hand sure doesn't know what it's doing; it's just pretending! That's a secret though, so shh!!!)

Hahaha, YES! If it were any longer, I'd feel you were putting too much into it, but it's just long enough for a good laugh and some-- I dunno... filling. It's a donut

TheBetterAudioPortal responds:

donut
